John Ratcliffe

Smithy

Bethesda new
In 1828 a twenty-two year old preacher, John Rattenbury (above), conducted an outdoor service from the steps of a house in St Philip's Street ) not far from the present building.

Soon the growing congregation hired a disused blacksmith's shop (above) with room for about 100 people and fitted it out with benches, a pulpit and a place for a small orchestra with bass, flute and clarinet.

The present building cost £1,390 and was opened in 1846 by the Rev. Robert Newton and John Rattenbury who had now become a Wesleyan Methodist Minister.
