Bethesda receives National Eco-Award

Bethesda is the 17th church in England, and the first Methodist church in the Bristol District to receive the National Eco-Congregation Award which recognises its stewardship of God's Creation through practical action. The special plaque was presented to Claire Davies (representing the church) by Jonathon Porritt - Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission and Co-Founder of Forum for the Future.

Bethesda's Eco-Congregation Programme has continued to develop and our "Ten Green Commandments" touch on all aspects of church activities as well as individual lifestyles. The Bethesda Youth Group (BYG) is monitoring their "Green retreat" (see below), the Traidgreenstall is flourishing and the recycling programme has been extended to include spectacles, batteries, mobile phones, aluminium foil and stamps..

"My picture of a green church
is a community of people who follow Jesus,
live sustainably, build community locally and globally,
and who value, protect and cherish God's creation in word, action and worship."

Rev. Dave Bookless, UK Director of AROCHA

" In the final analysis it is not Global Conferences or Earth Summits
which will ensure the transition move towards more sustainable ways
of living - it is the apparently insignificant day-today decisions which we all take - consciously or unconsciously - to tread more lightly as good stewards of God's Earth. "
