Special fundraising - AIDS Care in South Africa

Sukumawenze Place of Care
Mater Christi Home, Redhill
Kwazulu Natal, South Africa

Led by the enthusiasm of Gill & Keith Spears, the church has been raising money to support the work of Sister Mary Anne and colleagues at SPOC - the Sukumawenze Place of Care in Kwazulu Natal.

"Though we have only 25 beds in January we admitted 28 people. Most of them die here, but we have a volunteer Zulu doctor -Dr Zuke - who does help out by sending a few to the hospital when they reach that stage".

We are most grateful for Dr Zuke's joyful, gratuitous service.

AIDS in this country is like a blood sucker. One of Dr Zuke's patients is Fatima, a young lady of 17. She was raped at the age of 12 and is now here in critical condition. Thanks to you her last days will be better than many who do not make it here. The turn over at the hospice has been heavy these last weeks: 10 in the last month. We have no mortuary; all we have is a screen which we place around the bed.
With your generosity we have bought a TV which we are hoping to install soon. It is a long standing request by the patients. This will help many to pass the long hours as they are too weak to take part in projects or go anywhere. We will also buy some magazines and books. When the rate of people coming in increases we use up more and more of our medical supplies. We receive no funds for them. This and the food are the greatest costs we need to carry.

Yes, I was pleased to get your gift of 525 pounds. The joy you provide!

You folks at Bethesda, you give without seeing the joy and tears of gratitude that we see when we make use of your funds. You are the true givers with a big heart that can embrace the pain and the people that you don't see. God love you!
